British Olympians wearing Adidas

Now that the World Cup and Wimbeldon have concluded, I can focus on the 2012 Olympics again. The latest bit of design-related news concerns the uniforms that host team Great Britain will be sporting (pun intended.) Home-grown fashion designer Stella McCartney will serve as the Creative Director of Adidas in outfitting the olympians.

“This is the ultimate fusion of performance and style and we are delighted to further our relationship with Stella in this way.” says Nick Craggs, Marketing Director for adidas UK. Stella too is excited, adding “… it is an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity to be creative director of Team GB as the hosting nation of the London 2012 Olympic Games.” Those gooey quotes and more from the news post on the British Olympic Association official site.

McCartney already produces a line of sportswear, Adidas by Stella McCartney, and will add Team GB, a new olympic-style line for the rest of us.

Oddly, this reminds me of one of the first ever posts on this blog, where remarked on Stella McCartney’s team-up with H&M, Luella Bartley’s line at Target, and overall Britishness in America.

Regarding America, the outfitter is Ralph Lauren, but I don’t believe RL himself has teamed up with any sportswear makers. I don’t know if we yanks would go for that, frankly. I mean, what does an old man know about 21st century technological-enhanced sports gear. We literally teamed up with NASA to develop the swim suits. That just doesn’t say “Ralph”. But the casual gear worn by team USA is pretty sharp.
